Some call us legends... others say we are simply a way of life
But seriously... read on to get acquainted with your Outabout Walks hosts - Chris and Steve
When I joined the RAF, they decided to use an Infantry Boot Camp as their method for carrying out Officer Training. Once. And it was my course. "OHS" wasn't Occupational Health and Safety - it was the noise we made when we sprained, broke or ruptured something. Despite this, I was lucky enough to survive - and I got hooked on the great outdoors. At 30, common sense kicked in, and climbing meant arriving at the summit with everything still intact. My career in the RAF, with its hot and cold running helicopters, meant this could be done in comfort and style... I got the nickname 'Bengo' from 'Baby Engineering Officer' but I still tell people the B stands for ballistics - so much more cool. And more credible as I get older. I left the airforce to see the world and have lived in the UK, Germany, Bahrain, Dubai, Thailand and Ferndale - that last one's in Perth, Western Australia... My work history is (in chronic logical order):
When we meet you'll understand that this means little trains (and boats and aeroplanes) I live with my lovely teenage daughter who accepts: "Growing up with him makes teenage angst a welcome diversion. After him, life can only get easier..." I have the body of a God. Unfortunately, it's the Buddha. So I am currently working on getting fitter - I've already mastered the skill of enjoying life - and this is where Outabout came in...
At the age of eight, I joined the Scouting movement as a Wolf Cub - with the 1st Alberton Scout Group. I 'went up' to Scouts and then Venturers (Senior Scouts) at the appropriate ages, expanding my horizons and building my bushcraft skills. This got me out of the suburbs on a regular basis, and helped instill in me a love of the great outdoors. Activities included camping, hiking, and kayaking. When it finally became too embarassing to be seen publicly in shorts any longer, I was commissioned as a scout leader, and graduated to long khaki trousers. I had the opportunity to run three different Scout Troops, organising many hiking and camping expeditions. My work life has also included:
My interests also include gardening. For many years I have grown vegetables and tended a small collection of bonsai trees. In recent times, I have turned an interest in growing medicinal herbs into a more focused effort at becoming an amateur herbalist. I am currently working towards becoming an idiot-savant - I'm half-way there...
